The other day a neighbour asked whether I could teach her Spanish. She is from the UK and has been living here in Granada for about 9 months. I don't usually teach Spanish (even though I started out as a foreign language teacher) – I run my own sewing business offering made to measure flamenco dance costumes and I'm a mind coach for creative women; I help them get out of their own way so that they can bring their gift out into the world in an inspired, effortless way and make a decent living in the process.
So I was curious why she'd asked me and what she'd already done to learn Spanish.
She explained that she'd signed up for online courses, taken in person classes, basically tried to learn Spanish in lots of ways, felt she understood a fair bit but still couldn't speak any Spanish. She's too worried to make a fool out of herself in front of people, she gets so nervous that she doesn't even try.
Of course, not being able to speak with Spanish people makes it difficult to really feel at home in Spain. And no, yet another Spanish course isn't likely to solve the problem.
