? “Having lived out of Germany for so many years has made me realize that I’m very German.” ?

.. that's a snippet from my conversation with Chris Smit for the Culture Matters Podcast.

I've always been fascinated by other languages and different cultures. At the same time, having grown up “behind the wall” in East Germany, the unified Germany never fully felt like home to me.

So when life presented me with the option to move to Australia I didn't hesitate.

Living in a different country, not just going on a holiday, opened my world in lots of – often unexpected – ways.

It doesn't only challenge your assumptions about “how things are”, in many cases it makes it clear that what you “know for sure” is in fact nothing but a well rehearsed assumption.

For me, after 5 years in Australia I spent 5 years in the UK before moving to Spain in 2004, where yes, I do quite often feel really Germany ?

Are you living in the country you were born in? If not, where have you lived?
